Our Story

Wheatbelt Native Gardens (WNG) is a grower & supplier of quality WA Native Plant Species for Wheatbelt domestic gardens.

WNG founder, Richard McDowell, has worked in the Conservation & Land Management Industry for over ten years and has extensive experience in numerous disciplines.

As a CLM lecturer within the Vocational and Educational Training sector, Richard has worked both within the TAFE system and as a Trainer on the Federal Government’s former Green Army Program.

Richard has also worked in numerous roles as an Environmental Projects Manager with private entities and with Local Government.

Over the years, Richard’s interest in propagating, growing and collecting Western Australia’s unique flora species has accelerated.


A member of the Wildflower Society of WA, Richard has worked for and with a number of WA Native Plant Nurseries, acquiring particular skills and knowledge with regards to not only specific species propagation, but nursery procedures and methodologies.

Richard is an experienced Native Seed Collector and is particularly known for his propagation work with Eremophilas and Quandongs.

Along with his family, Richard was featured on the ABC TV’s Gardening Australia program in mid-2022.
